An extension ladder can normally get you up to roof level, depending the length of your ladder or the height of the eves. But once you are there have you taken a moment to think about what you are leaning the ladder against? Putting the ladder against the guttering is one of the surest ways to get a trip to the A&E department, because most guttering nowadays is made of plastic. This just isn’t strong enough and is likely to crush or splinter with the combined weight of you and the ladder.

The solution is to fit a simple but effective ladder standoff. This will keep the ladder clear away from the guttering and give you more room to work in without your face being right up against the wall. The standoff will help to prevent the ladder from sliding at speed along the guttering, which can be more terrifying than breaking through the gutter.
